My partner is a Mexican dancer so I wanted to show his stance, his seriousness, and his pride in his culture. He very much wants to teach it to the next generation. He gave a great analogy that younger children are like trees growing, who need the firm roots of their heritage and culture.

Mi compañero es danzante mexicano , así que quería mostrar su postura, su seriedad y su orgullo por su cultura. Él tiene muchas ganas de enseñar a la próxima generación. Dio una gran analogía, que los niños pequeños son como árboles crecientes, que necesitan las raíces firmes de su herencia y cultura.

What we want to show in the photograph is the joy that we have for the art of dance. We want to capture her confidence, her energy, and her positivity that she so confidently displays. We exchanged ideas and exchanged her culture with mine. That is a very beautiful experience. She taught me that we must be very communal because she has dedicated herself to supporting Polish women.

Lo que queremos mostrar en la fotografía es la alegría que sentimos por el arte de la danza. Queremos captar su confianza, su energía y su positividad que muestra con tanta confianza. Intercambiamos ideas e intercambiamos su cultura con la mía. Es una experiencia muy hermosa. Ella me enseñó que debemos ser muy comunales con su dedicación a apoyar a las mujeres polacas.
Though Barbara moved to the United States at the age of one, she has stayed steeped in her family’s Polish Heritage all her life. Her love of Polish folk dance began when she was a young teenager and she has since danced, choreographed and directed various performance groups. She enjoys Polish folk art of Pisanki, painting designs on eggs with beeswax, and Wycinanki, paper cut outs. To pass this along to the younger generations, she is an instructor in the Polish Scouting organization and a founding member of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Professional Women’s Association that provides scholarships to young women.

Barbara se ha mantenido inmersa en la herencia polaca de su familia, con un amor por la danza folclórica polaca y el arte popular de Pisanki (pintar diseños en huevos con cera de abejas) y Wycinanki, (recortes de papel). Ella transmite esto a las generaciones más jóvenes a través de organizaciones de exploración y educación.
Saúl loves the dance of Mexico, as well as the music, culture and traditions. He works hard to teach it to the next generation of his community. He is very family-oriented. He came here for one year to help his mother. Now it’s 26 years later, he’s still here and still helping his mother. But in the meantime, he also got married and has three children.
“What I would like you to know is that Staten Island is a very small community, but with a lot of culture. There are many organizations that are forming cultural and ancestral dance groups and I want these talents to be made known.”

Saúl ama la danza de México, así como la música, la cultura y las tradiciones. Hace grandes esfuerzos para enseñar a la próxima generación.
