We have a lot of things in common. I’m hard of hearing and she’s hard of hearing. We are connected in being an advocate for people – from the low-income community, housing needs, disability rights, incarcerated people or immigrants. We help by giving food, clothing, and education.

Tenemos muchas cosas en común. Yo tengo problemas de audición y ella tiene problemas de audición. Estamos conectadas en defender a las personas – de la comunidad de bajos ingresos, necesidades de vivienda, derechos de discapacidad, personas encarceladas o inmigrantes. Ayudamos dando comida, ropa y educación.

Because she said that she was shy, that stood out for me. So I wanted to bring out her courage, her power. I asked her, what makes you feel powerful? I was photographing her doing sign [language]. And then also fists. She was throwing her fist up in the air and signing “deaf power.”

Ella dijo que era tímida, eso me llamó la atención. Así que quise resaltar su coraje, su poder. Le pregunté, ¿qué te hace sentir poderosa? La fotografié haciendo lenguaje de señas. Y luego también los puños. Estaba levantando el puño en el aire y señalando “poder sordo”.
Amany was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She is Egyptian American and currently living in Staten Island. She is a proud hard of hearing and an accessibility activist. She earned a master’s degree in Public Administration. She is a benefits counselor and helps people with direct services. She is part of the Deaf Muslim Association – USA, Muslim Sisters of Staten Island, the MUSHEN, and the Muslim American Society of NYC.

Pilar: Soy una guerrera, una machetera, a warrior that fights for our liberation. I identify as multi racial, multi cultural, a Latina, a mother, born and raised NYC street kid from the hood. I am an original club kid from the late 80’s early 90s, an original homegirl from the block. I identify as a bruja. I am a dancer and lover of music. I am a Prison Industrial Complex Abolitionist, fighting for a better world for all living things. I am into anarchism, I am anti-capitalist and anti colonialist as much as I can be in a hyper-capitalist dominant planet. I am gender non conforming and lucky to be living while queer. I am of the underclass, an outcast, a rebel dismantling and annihilating while simultaneously co-creating and building a world without cages, guided by love.
