Annie Zhou and Duane Joseph

Duane Joseph | Brooklyn

Portrait by Annie Zhou

In loving memory of
Duane Joseph
September 19, 1978 – August 7, 2023

Duane is extremely humble. Don’t take it at face value when he says he just does a little bit in the community because he does a lot in the community. He’s worked and volunteered at all levels, whether it’s in the Caribbean community, in the Brooklyn community. You don’t really know until you really talk to him.

Annie Zhou | Queens

Portrait by Duane Joseph

I wanted to capture her sense of fun and love for the city. Like she really, really enjoys New York. She is a very dynamic woman, very smart and very compassionate. In the [public health] work she does, it’s very easy to get lost in the sauce and be a little rigid. But she still has retained empathy and compassion.

Annie is passionate about health equity, the outdoors and traveling to new countries. She has lived and worked in the Philippines, Myanmar and Ethiopia. Since her teenage years, she has participated in the predominantly Chinese nine-man volleyball community that originated in Toisan, China and sprung up on the East Coast as a way for Chinese immigrants to gather as a result of the Chinese Exclusion act.

Duane’s passion centers around his drive to build equitable access for and in Black communities. Over the years, Duane has married his professional experience, Afro-Caribbean heritage, and passion for small business into his efforts to advocate for equitable access to resources for Black communities. He is a co-founder of the Parkside Plaza Committee, a member of his local community board, and serves as an advisor for Little Caribbean NYC and the Flatbush Beacon program.
