She volunteers a lot. She’s very much into historic preservation and she’s thinking outside the box. What more can we do? How do we save it?

Victoria is extremely dedicated to her community. And I just admire that level of commitment that she has. She is an advocate. She is your Joan of Arc type of person. What I was hoping to capture in her portrait was the fact that she’s such a free spirit. I wanted her to throw her hair around, shake it up a bit, try different poses.

Victoria tiene una gran dedicación por su comunidad. Y yo simplemente admiro su nivel de compromiso. Es una defensora de derechos. Es un tipo de Juana de Arco. Lo que yo esperaba captar en su retrato es que ella tiene un espíritu tan libre. Quise que sacudiera su cabello, se moviera, tratara diferentes poses.
We often divide ourselves up when we’re doing preservation, advocacy, things like that. But everybody’s getting pushed. And we need to come together to fight those things. We can’t be divided up. We’ve already talked about working together on legislative changes and things, because if she can get some in Queens and I, some in Brooklyn and then some of the umbrella groups, we might actually be able to be successful.

Lisa is an artist who expresses herself in many mediums. Creating is a ritual honoring my femininity. She is historian for Addisleigh Park Civic Organization and works to support an artist residency with Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning.

Victoria spearheads educational, cultural and preservation efforts where she was born and raised in Bay Ridge Brooklyn – from the Ridge Creative Center, which teaches various subjects through the arts; to Viking Fest and the Scandinavian East Coast Museum, which preserves cultural history; to the Bay Ridge Conservancy, which enhances the local environment; to the Bay Ridge Arts & Cultural Alliance and many others.
