Yaya works with a non-profit group helping Senegalese people who come to the United States. The Jewish expression for that is a Landsmanshaft, a benevolent society of people who have roots in a certain place. So he helps people from Senegal acclimate and feel at home in the big scene of New York City.

My partner today is Ellen from Brooklyn, Bay Ridge. We learned a lot from each other. What I learned from her is what she’s done as a teacher and as a writer. She wrote books and she’s raising two daughters – one in college and the other has graduated and is now working.

In today’s social gathering, we all meet different people, different cultures, different cultural backgrounds, and we all live in the city. Even though we live in a different borough, we learn how people can connect together, how anyone can help someone.

Ellen is a lifelong Brooklynite. She and her husband HD have two daughters. Ellen is a veteran teacher, as well as a writer and tour guide. She is part of the Brooklyn Jewish Historical Initiative. Her books include the trilogy The Lost Synagogues of NYC, and Walking Manhattan. She loves music, photography and baseball.

Yaya is the president and founder of the Senegalese Association of America. Through this organization, he helps new immigrants from Senegal to find a job, learn English, secure health insurance and more. Through COVID-19, they organized with food distribution, medical translation and providing funds for the community.
