I wanted to show her sweetness. I found her very respectful, very animated. It turns out we have a lot in common in terms of culture. We talked about New York City and how our two groups, Mexicans and African Americans, how we deal here and the things that help us and the things that stop us in the city.

Quise mostrar su dulzura. Me pareció muy respetuosa, muy animada. Resulta que tenemos mucho en común a nivel cultural. Hablamos sobre la ciudad de Nueva York y cómo nuestros dos grupos, mexicano y afroamericano, cómo lidiamos aquí y las cosas que nos ayudan y las cosas que son obstáculos en la ciudad”.

Empowerment, optimistic and loyal. She’s willing to help, even though she can look serious at first. When I first greeted her, she seemed not willing to look me straight in the eye. After we got to know each other, she calls me like I’m a granddaughter and I could call her granny now. Her seriousness helps her show leadership, but she’s very willing to help people.
自强、乐观、忠诚。虽然一开始看起来很严肃，但 Shirley 乐于助人——我第一次见到她时，她似乎不愿意直视我，但是一旦熟悉了，她把我当成孙女了，而我还会叫她奶奶。那严肃的性格体现了她的领导能力，同时她也非常愿意帮助他人。
Empoderamiento, optimista y leal. Está dispuesta a ayudar, aunque al principio puede parecer seria. Cuando la saludé al principio, parecía no querer mirarme directamente a los ojos. Después de conocernos, ella me llama como si yo fuera su nieta y ahora yo podría llamarla abuela. Su seriedad la ayuda a mostrar liderazgo, pero está muy dispuesta a ayudar a la gente.
Shirley is a highly accomplished community advocate and single mother of five, Born and raised in North Carolina, Shirley later moved to the South Bronx where she raised her children.
Shirley is a proud graduate of Lincoln University, where she earned a Masters degree in Human Services. With her extensive education and experience, Shirley has been an invaluable resource advocating for her community. She has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around her, particularly single mothers and families in need, ensuring they have access to the resources and programs they need to succeed such as education and daycare services.
Thanks to her incredible work ethic, determination, and compassion, Shirley Jones has become a well-respected and beloved member of her community. Her tireless efforts to help others make her a true inspiration and role model for us all.

Shirley es una defensora comunitaria altamente consumada y madre soltera de cinco hijos. Ella ha trabajado incansablemente para mejorar las vidas de quienes la rodean, particularmente las madres solteras y familias necesitadas, para garantizar que tengan acceso a recursos como la educación y el cuidado infantil.
Born and raised in The Bronx, Jared is a photographer and advocate. Part of the Bronx Documentary Center, she likes to take photographs of the community to expose the beauty of the city and people. She is Mexican American, trying to break barriers in society through capturing photos of marginalized people. She overcomes obstacles to demonstrate to other youth that they can also achieve their dreams of becoming professionals and becoming their true selves, despite society’s injustices.

Nacida y criada en el Bronx, Jared es fotógrafa y defensora de derechos. Le gusta tomar fotografías de la comunidad para exponer la belleza de la ciudad y la gente. Es mexicana-americana, y trata de romper barreras en la sociedad captando fotos de las personas marginadas.
