Mariano Martinez | the Bronx

Portrait by Victoria Carrique

Being a dancer, the portraits came through with how poised and balanced and confident he was. We connected on our passion for the arts but more importantly, the fulfillment we get from sharing it with others. He is passionate about combining dance and the need for children to learn how to express themselves.

Portrait by Mariano Martinez

She’s a very powerful woman. She knows who she is. She’s found her calling through art. She loves her children. She’s innovative. And she’s always going to find a way. When photographing her, I was allowing her to be herself fully. In all of who she is.

Mariano is a dancer and choreographer of Garifuna heritage, who has carved quite a niche for himself in the tri-state area. Not only does he choreograph quinceñearas and sweet sixteen celebrations for teens of Latin American, Caribbean Americans and Black Americans heritage. He also helps schools, non-profits, and youth organizations create engaging, impactful and transformative dance programs. An integral part of his choreography are discussions with the participants about future goals and how they can take everything they have learned and apply it to everyday life.

In Mariano’s eyes, there is no difference between creative movement to make the show and creative thinking to become successful in life. He has put his talents to great use and his service fills a need for youth around the world.

Victoria received her Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from The Fashion Institute of Technology in 1993, and worked as a high end residential Interior Designer for almost twenty years. She completed projects throughout the tri-state area, Florida and California, and has been published in dozens of interior design magazines and books. However, nothing has been more rewarding than the decade she spent raising her children at her home in Brooklyn, New York.

Through that experience, she realized her calling and became a certified Paraprofessional with the New York Department of Education in 2020. She found her first employment at a Regional Enrichment Center teaching art to children of first responders during the COVID shut down. Developing lessons around “The Masters” like Van Gogh, Picasso and Matisse- her students were provided with a creative outlet during a very uncertain time in our history. For the last three years, she has been working in middle school and continues to provide art instruction for The Federation of Italian-American Organizations (FIAO) of Brooklyn and The Brooklyn Public Library. Victoria is currently “living her best life” serving her community in South Brooklyn through education and her passion for the arts!
